[Ce.01] Experimental evaluation of time-dependent fluid-dynamic forces

Flavio Noca, Doug Shiels, David Jeon (California Institute of Technology)

We present an exact expression for the evaluation of time-dependent forces on a body in an incompressible and viscous cross-flow which only requires the knowledge of the velocity field (and its derivatives) on the \emphsurface of an arbitrary control volume enclosing the body. Since flow information is not required within the control volume, this method thus solves the issue of having to resolve boundary layers near the body surface, which present-day experimental techniques are unable to do. The formulation is verified numerically on an oscillating circular cylinder flow, and is tested experimentally with Digital Particle Image Velocimetry (DPIV) on a two-dimensional, jerking circular cylinder flow at Re =3D 100.
