[D5.008] Atomic velocity effects on degenerate four-wave mixing in an optically-pumped two-level atomic sodium beam

D. S. Elliott, Binh Do (Purdue University)

We present computer simulations and experimental measurements of the degenerate phase-conjugate four-wave mixing signal generated by an optically-pumped two-level atomic sodium beam interacting with a narrow-band cw laser field. We are investigating the effect of the atomic velocity on the spectrum of the four-wave mixing signal, as determined by varying the crossing angle between the atomic beam and the laser beams. The simulated and measured four-wave mixing spectra display very strong variation as we vary this crossing angle, not as a spectral shift, but rather through the lineshape. These results illustrate the complexity of degenerate four-wave mixing processes in Doppler-broadened media.
