[R1.001] The NSF at 50: Prologues and Prospects

Robert Eisenstein (National Science Foundation)

For 50 years the National Science Foundation has been the Nation's leading supporter of non-medical science and engineering research, and science education, at our universities and colleges. This support has led to many dramatically important discoveries. It has also helped to produce a broad science and engineering workforce that is second to none in the world. Nonetheless, the challenges facing the science and engineering enterprise in the twenty-first century are daunting and cannot be ignored as we plan for the years ahead. A brief retrospective of NSF's past, and some discussion of what the future might hold, are the subjects of this talk.
