Session Q14 - DCMP: SEMICONDUCTORS: MAGNETISM
Mixed session, Friday morning, March 24, 8:00
Room J4, San Jose Convention Center
We have investigated the magnetic and calorimetric properties of Zn_1-x Cr_x Te and Cd_1-x Cr_x Te . We have found that the magnetic behavior of these materials is well described by a theoretical model including crystal-field, Jahn-Teller, spin-orbit, and spin-spin effects including ligand-field corrections to the spin-orbit and spin-spin parameters. We have constructed the complete 25x25 Hamiltonian for these systems and numerically calculated the energy levels as a function of field. These energy levels were used to calculate the magnetization as functions of both field and temperature. Reasonable agreement with the data was found for spin-orbit parameters of -59 cm^-1 and -50 cm^-1 and Jahn-Teller energies of 320 cm^-1 and 370 cm^-1 for Zn_1-x Cr_x Te and Cd_1-x Cr_x Te , respectively.
