[Q05.05] Technology Needs for Resource Efficient Vehicles: The PNGV and Beyond

J.E. Anderson (Ford Motor Company)

The Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles (PNGV), announced in September 1993, is an unique joint venture between the Federal Government and the U.S. auto industry. PNGV has three Goals: (1) Improved automotive manufacturing; (2) Nearterm technologies for lower vehicle emissions and higher corporate average fuel economy; (3) CY 2004 production prototype vehicles with three times the fuel economy of today's comparable vehicles. This fuel economy improvement is to be accomplished while retaining affordability, and without compromising customer or regulatory require- ments. PNGV Goal #3 often is described, erroneously, as a R&D program although its CY 2004 timeframe rules out unproven research concepts. Rather, PNGV Goal #3 emphasizes demonstration programs in which proven technologies, developed for aerospace and defense applications, are applied to automobiles. This talk will describe the PNGV Technology Portfolio, and use it as a baseline for discussing technology needs extending beyond the PNGV time-horizon.
