[Q05.03] Materials and the Greening of Industrial Ecosystems

Deanna Richards (National Academy of Engineering)

Industrial ecology, according to the White House report "Technologies for a Sustainable Future: A Framework for Action," is a new paradigm for creating that future. As an assessment of materials and energy flows through the economy (i.e. interconnected industrial processes and consumer activities) and the natural ecosystem, industrial ecology provides a framework for managing materials and energy from economic and environmental perspectives. This talk will examine some of the technical challenges of this new model for the management of materials in industry and its relationship with the environment. It will also point out some of the socio-economic concerns that need to be addressed.
